problems with WriteFlow downloads from foreign sites

February 4th, 2011

We are still working on the next update and it will bring some important improvements. In the meanwhile, I would like to say something about those plenty of sites which apparently just grab automatically our product and offer it for download: We have no idea if there are any modifications made and if they introduce some malware. We just notice that sometimes there is a Feedback Report sent during the update process, which seems to point in direction of some unauthorized modifications.

So, if you downloaded WriteFlow from some other source than our website, please delete it and download again directly from our website. We will give you any help we can with any problem you experience, as long as you downloaded from our website.

flatten and merge in WriteFlow

December 16th, 2010

I just wrote a new page on the forum on the difference between flatten and merge. Even though you can use WriteFlow without knowing too much about its underlying structure, this might still help you to better understand the possibilities of this program.

We are intensely working on the next update which will include some very nice new features. Thank you for your patience!

BibTeX import

November 18th, 2010

Many important websites like Google Scholar can’t be accessed directly via our Media Search, because they don’t offer a Z39.50 Gateway, but it is possible to easily import the references into WriteFlow.

  1. Choose “Show links to import citations into BibTeX” in the Scholar Preferences
  2. Search for the articles you want to import
  3. Click on the “BibTeX” link of a given article
Select the BibTeX code and drag it on the WriteFlow Application Icon in the Dock. Now you have the Media information. If there is a PDF available, just continue:
  4. Make sure that you see the grey “No content available” in the lower half of the window when the newly imported media is selected. Click on the button which is selected here, if this is not the case:
  5. Click on your Download Folder in the Dock, choose the last item and drag it on the grey lower half of the WriteFlow Media View.

It is also possible to drag whole bibliographies (as text or .bib files) on the WriteFlow Application Icon.

Please take a look at our short video in our forum to see how it is done:

WriteFlow and Dropbox

October 27th, 2010

Dropbox is a very popular service which is used for instant backup as much as for convenience when working on more than one computer. How to use Dropbox with WriteFlow was an issue for many users (and for ourselves). The WriteFlow database is stored in the documents folder, which normally is not the synced Dropbox folder.

A simple alias won’t allow you to move your WriteFlow folder into the Dropbox folder, but here is a way how you can do this by using symbolic links. Only follow the instruction when you feel comfortable with the Terminal, we cannot be made responsible for any consequence.

IMPORTANT: Do not try to access the same WriteFlow database simultaneously with more than one computer! This would corrupt your database!

  • Close WriteFlow
  • For safety, please create a zip archive of your WriteFlow folder
  • Move the WriteFlow folder from the Documents folder to the Dropbox folder
  • Open the Terminal.app
  • Change this line corresponding to your own file structure:
    ln -s ~/Dropbox/WriteFlow/ ~/Documents/WriteFlow
  • Reopen WriteFlow
  • Depending on the size of your WriteFlow folder, this may eat up a significant part of your Dropbox space and you might find that it produces quite a lot of traffic (This can be an issue when you’re on a limited 3G connection).

If you haven’t got a Dropbox account, you can easily get one for free by clicking on this link. Disclaimer: We used our referral code on this, because you’ll get 250mb extra.

    0.9117 Beta

    October 13th, 2010

Just a small update to fix a few bugs we missed with the last big update. There were minor problems due to the migration of the database which led to annoying behavior, especially during import of media information, PDFs and RTFs.

It won’t be perfect now, as apparently it never is, but it should be better.

The RTF import strips all the style information from the imported text. This is one of those things that are not perfect at all, and we will have to implement a possibility to manually match RTF styles to WriteFlow Element Types and to deal with RTF Headlines, TOCs etc. We could spend a lot of time on it, but real bugs and really important missing features keep us from things like that. If you want it changed sooner, you have to complain to us.

You can help us in our effort by sending in feedback or by even buying a license.

WriteFlow 0.9116 Beta, Z39.50, Entrez and Safari Extension

    October 5th, 2010

Finally. The latest update is ready now and this time we are really excited. We still see how much is left to do, but then we also see how much we have done in the last few months.

    A few examples are

    - Safari Extension for one click import of Websites
    - Complete overhaul of the WriteFlow Element System with new much improved way to apply changes to versions
    - BibTeX import with easy drag’n'drop of BibTeX text on the WriteFlow application icon
    - individually configurable Z39.50 and Entrez (eg. Pubmed) Server access for media information download
    - New display of search results
    - Much improved stability
    - Many fixed bugs (accents, spellchecking in quote editor, etc..)
    - (Slightly) new icon

You’ll find WriteFlow Server Definition Files to connect to databases like Pubmed or Library of Congress in the Forum

For those of you who didn’t download the latest package from the website but used the update function from within WriteFlow, please download the Safari Extension from here.

And you might want to download some more Output Styles and two documents to help to get to know WriteFlow from here.

    Recent activities

One of the important features of WriteFlow is its ability to connect to servers to download bibliographical information. At the moment we are integrating the Yaz framework to be able to connect easily to a lot of different servers. Users of WriteFlow will be able to connect to any bibliographical server providing a supported gateway by just entering the corresponding login information.

Still, we have to overcome some problems because the information many of those servers deliver is not as clean and correct as we would like it to be, and furthermore the ways those servers provide fulltext pdfs are not always identical, which makes it hard to offer a smooth user experience.

But those of you who used WriteFlow already will know that it’s a rocky start, so no surprises here.

The second big topic we are working on are versions and chapters. Unfortunately, there are still some ways to cause major hiccups when you play around with the WriteFlow Element System. It proved to be much more difficult than we initially expected, because we have to deal with a lot of special cases and as nobody has ever tried to do what we did with WriteFlow, we had (and still have) to reinvent a lot of very basic stuff.

What you see in the current version of WriteFlow is a compromise between functionality and usability which frankly does not make as totally happy (even apart from those annoying bugs). There are a lot of examples where we opted for a solution which was at first easier to implement to reduce complexity, but which in return raised complexity for our users.

So, that is what we are doing right now: We want to reduce complexity, go back to our initial goal of a rather simple word processor where all the magic only comes in when you want it.

This will take some time, but we would like to thank those of you who follow the development closely and especially those of you who decided to support us by already buying a license. We will continue to update WriteFlow regularly throughout the process because we really appreciate the feedback we get from you.

    Update 0.9115 Beta

    May 28th, 2010

We just published the new update which brings great new functionality, i.e. fulltext search in PDFs and Webarchives.
We also continued our work on the chapters and headline system. It’s still not perfect and we have to deal with some more special cases and tricky bugs, but everything is moving in the right direction.

If you’ve just downloaded WriteFlow you can enjoy the new features immediately, but if you have already some PDFs and Webarchives in your old WriteFlow database, you’ll have to rebuild the search index to include those files in the WriteFlow Search.

Before you do so, we strongly advise you to zip the whole “WriteFlow”-folder, which you find inside your “documents”-folder. This is a precautionary measure, but it gives you the possibility to come back to the old state in case of anything goes wrong.

Just rightclick on the “WriteFlow”-folder in your “Documents”-folder and create a WriteFlow.zip archive.

So, to recreate the search index, just open the Preferences (you can use the Command Tool to do so), go to the “Advanced”-Panel and click on the “Recreate Search Index”-button. Depending on the size of your database and the speed of your Mac, this might take a minute or two.

Please let us know if you encounter any problems and include your e-mail in the Feedback Reports, we often want to recontact you to get some further information.

I hope you enjoy WriteFlow as much as we do!
    Georg
